MURAL PHOTOS!

Exciting!  Last summer I had the opportunity to design, supervise, and participate in painting a mural for the Orem Fire Department, which they use now to teach "Fire Station Field-Tripper Kiddo's" about fire and road safety.  About 40 people helped us paint, and we finished in only two days.  Today I got the photos from Don, UVU's Illustration Advisor, which he shot himself and I'm excited to share a few of them with you!  Eventually I hope to have a time-lapsed video posted.  Many of the fellow painters were friends (and awesome artists) I get to have classes with at UVU, as you will see...

First Official "Story Illustration" Freelance Job!......And I'm an Artist

Hi!!  Yes I'm excited :).  I "had to" find a freelance job for my Senior Seminar class, but pleasantly found myself in a great opportunity to do an actual story's single illustration for a friend.  This painting goes to an exciting enchanted story he and his 5 yr old daughter made up together, about a princess with a large chest full of dresses that need sorting, a bed SO high that stairs are needed, and an elf messenger from an elf-village seeking her help.  I was pretty nervous to show him the finished piece, but when I did, he loved it.  He's excited to give this special gift to his daughter!

What did I learn?  That I'm a professional, and it's time to act like it.  He paid me like a real artist, $300, so that helped me feel more... serious, more professional.  According to Will Terry, I'm already good enough to begin work at a professional level... .... ... ... what?  I am?  So I decided it's time to own it.  Lee's been trying to get this through to me for some time now.  She said something the other day that made me think.  This is NOT just "raw natural talent."  This is years of practicing and developing and honing my skill.  Years and years.  Besides dozens of art classes at more than one university, I've been drawing since I was old enough to know how, and never really stopped.  I've earned this!  This is a result of plenty hard work and focus.

My FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK!

I'm currently working on my first Children's Book!  I wrote the story and will illustrate it for my BFA graduating project!  I'll let you all know when the big show is, which should be end of Aug/big of Sept.  Here's a couple sketches... I'll give you little glimpses of my progress as I go along, so STAY TUNED!

One of my best dear artist friends Alicia VanNoy Call paints pets for commissions across the WORLD, and recently started filming her process and making time elapsed videos with music.  SO COOL!  I love watching her hand fling all over the painting while the painting evolves before my eyes in a short matter of minutes!  I HAD to share.  I love watching this kind of stuff.

Simple Shapes to make Art

Perry wanted us to simplify simplify simplify.  No shading.  No gradients.  Flat plain shapes and colors.  Requirements:  2 children, reversed point perspective, a foreground, midground, and background, atmosphere, animals (hopefully a lady bug and bird will count...), so there ya go!

Artist comments:  Um I love this.  This is the epitome of my perfect happy childhood place!!!  A treehouse in the middle of a beautiful forest, and a lady bug!!... did you guys ever make up dream places when you were a kid?

A PiggyWig with a Ring at the End of His Nose?

We had to illustrate a part of the story "The Owl and the Pussycat" and I couldn't get over the random humor of how the owl finally found a wedding ring to give his beloved pussy on a random island, where the "bong trees grow" at the end of a "piggywig"s nose!

This piece was inspired by Boris Artzybasheff.  (We were suppose to mimic the work of a dead illustrator)  His work looks like this:

We are Santa's ELVES

This is how I believe elves to be.  Very VERY small.

Richard, my prof, asks us to find models if possible.  Though I didn't take his advice and find an old man and rent a big white beard... Santa came out of my head.... my elves did have some help!

My friend Chris Burton exhibited excellent elf-posing skillsl.  He even let us mess his hair up and wore long johns!  But my favorite part was his elf-face.

Come Out of Your Cocoon

Ever feel like you are sitting in your cocoon, stirring around, growing, developing talents and abilities, and beautiful WINGS, and soon you'll come out and be AMAZING and confident and excited to meet the world!? That's what this painting is about. In our own timing, we blossom. Again and again and again!
